Civil registry

The Imperia State Archive and its sections of Sanremo and Ventimiglia hold the Civil Registry archives, subdivided in two parts: Civil Registry from 1785 to 1864 (which includes the certificates of the parishes, the Napoleonic Era and the Restoration Era) and the Oneglia and Porto Maurizio Italian Civil Registry (from 1866 to 1900) for the birth, marriage, death and citizenship certificates and the marriage announcements of the Imperia Province. In the Imperia archive the Sanremo Italian Civil Registry(1866-1900) holds files of Sanremo and its circumscription. There are some gaps and all the files are available for consultation unless they contain sensitive data, regulated by the data protection laws.

The Recruitment files, which hold the Recruitment Lists and the Draft cards, are: Military District – Recruitment Office of Porto Maurizio– Sanremo circumscription, Army Recruitment Lists (classes of 1866-1935); the Recruitment Lists of the Porto Maurizio Navy Military District(classes of 1901-1906); Porto Maurizio Captaincy – sailors draft cards (classes of 1886-1939); City of Oneglia – Recruitment Lists and draft cards (classes of 1792-1902); City of Porto Maurizio, Recruitment Lists (classes of 1792-1899). The draft cards give us information about the military service, the Army corps and the military campaigns in which the recruits served until their discharge.

Civil registry

The Grosseto State Archive holds the Civil Registry and the alphabetical lists of the years between 1866 and 1899. Those are the original duplicates issued by the cities of the province and were delivered by the Grosseto Provincial Court.

Army census

The Grosseto Military District archive holds the Recruitment Lists of the male citizens born between 1842 and 1920 in the District. The Recruitment Lists of the next military classes are held in the Florence State Archive.

Civil registry

The Treviso State Archive holds the Napoleonic Civil Registry files, that is to say, the duplicates of the birth, marriage and death certificates and alphabetical indexes and attached files issued by the cities of the Tagliamento Department to the local Courts. The Napoleonic Civil Registry (1806-1815) includes 188 cities of the former Napoleonic districts of Asolo, Castelfranco, Ceneda, Conegliano, Montebelluna, Motta, Oderzo, Serravalle, Treviso, Valdobbiadene.

From 1816 to the Italian Unification, the Civil Registry was carried ou by priests, so the research during this period should be done at the local dioceses and parishes.

The sources are gathered at the Treviso Provincial Recruitment Office, which contains the Recruitment Lists of the male citizens born in the district between 1902 and 1907; and 1911 and 1941; Venice Provincial Recruitment Office, for the residents born between 1912 and 1920;

This institution holds the files of the Treviso Military District, which includes the draft cards of the recruits born between 1874-1924, and the Venice Military District, which includes the draft cards of the recruits born between 1900 and 1933.

Draft lists

The State Archives in Gorizia hold the Udine Conscription Office – Conscription Lists (classes 1888-1948). The Gorizia Military District issued the Recruitment Lists with the help of the Recruitment Office, which supervised and completed the Recruitment Lists sent by the cities. In 1937 the Gorizia Military District was suppressed, and its functions were transferred to the Udine and Trieste Military Districts.

Each one of the lists contain information about the Civil Registry, physical features, occupation, alphabetization, and the ruling of the Recruitment Council.

Matriculation sheets and roles

The fond Distretto militare di Udine – Ruoli matricolari preserves the matriculation rolls (classes 1875-1937) of the Military District of Gorizia, abolished in 1937, whose jurisdiction was transferred to that of Udine. The archive has some gaps, and its military files can be found at the Trieste and Udine State Archives.

The State Archives in Gorizia preserve the conscription lists produced by the Gorizia Conscription Office for the birth classes from 1900 to 1952, a total of no. 145 archival units. (Conscription lists 1900-1952). In order to facilitate the retrieval of the information contained therein, the matriculation lists are being computerised and indexed. Currently, the computerised lists published here concern envelopes no. 32-64, 76, 81, 102.

In addition, the institute has made available a database concerning the Libri dei Fuochi. The Libri dei Fuochi are 33 registers compiled by the Municipality of Gorizia between the 19th and 20th centuries, containing data on families living in the area.

State Archives of Genoa

Marital status

The Genoa State Archives preserve civil status records collected in three fonds.a Napoleonic Civil Status Series (1795-1813), Rapallo parish register series (1838-1859) and Post-Unification Civil Status Register Series paid by the Court of Genoa and the Court of Chiavari (1866-1915): contains the second copies of birth, marriage, death and citizenship deeds with alphabetical indexes submitted by the civil status offices to the local court for preservation.

Draft lists

The Napoleonic period conscription lists of male citizens born in the municipalities of the department of Montenotte (classes 1786-1795); while theConscription Office of the Kingdom of Sardinia retains the lists of conscripts (classes 1792-1886) for the municipalities in the district of Albenga, Chiavari, Genoa, La Spezia, Savona. Maternity, paternity, domicile, occupation, somatic data and the outcome of the visit are noted for each member.

Matriculation sheets and roles

The District Military Fund of Genoa conserves the matriculation rolls (classes 1874-1884) and matriculation sheets (1874-1943) relating to Genoa and province and the matriculation sheets (1921-1943) relating to Massa and province.

Civil registry

The Terni State Archive holds the file sent by the City Council in the Parish Books series (1559-1865), which gathers the registries of the local and the circumscription parishesin and the Registry Civil deposited by the Terni court (1861-1900).

Army census

TheTerni Recruitment Office holds the Terni Recruitment Lists (classes of 1874-1944), and the Perugia Recruitment lists (sent by the Perugia State Archive), in which we will find information about the male residents of the present province of Terni (classes of 1925-1941). The series includes the draft dodgers list as well (classes of 1944-1950). A questi si devono aggiungere i registri di leva trasferiti dall’Archivio di Stato di Perugia relativi a tutti i cittadini maschi residenti nei comuni dell’attuale provincia di Terni (classi 1925-1941) e la serie comprende anche i renitenti (classi 1944-1950).

Civil registry

The Province of Trento has been entrusted with the custody and maintenance of the Civil Status fonds. At the State Archives of Trento it is possible to find documentation regarding the Civil Registry in the following fonds:

  • Giudizio Distrettuale di Condino (1814-1867, with documentation from 1708 to 1868)
  • Rovereto Civil Registry (1811-1814).

The Trento Military District holds the Recruitment Lists (classes of 1921-1950).

Recruitment number and military draw number

The Institute possesses the Draft card and military registry of those born between 1867 and 1950. It should be noted that the original documents of soldiers born between 1867 and 1900 who were employed by the Habsburg Army are kept at the Tiroler Landesarchiv in Innsbruck.

The Office for the Archival and Book Heritage and the Provincial Archives of Trento holds the fonds “Civil status of the Napoleonic era, 1811-1815” and “Istituto degli esposti, delle partorienti e dell’istruzione delle mammane alle Laste presso Trento, 1833-1920”.
It should also be noted that, following the issuing of the decree of 21 August 1815, the central court commission entrusted the curators of souls with the task of civil status officers, a role they performed until 1 January 1924, the date on which the Italian civil status was established in the Trentino municipalities. The relevant data are published on the website Nati in Trentino, a project carried out by the Diocesan Archive of Trento.

Civil registry

The Trapani State Archive holds the Civil Registry, which was established by the Bourbon in 1819, gathered in the so-called archive Civil Registry files (1820-1928). In this file we can find birth, marriage and death certificates, and, from 1866 on, citizenship certificates (most of them residence changes) issued by the cities of the circumscription.

Army census

The conscription acts are collected in the fund Trapani Recruitment Office. They are the recruitment list and extraction lists (1840-1914) and the lists of the sea conscription (1900-1926).

The Court of Taranto deposited the fund of the Italian Registry Civil (1862-1900) for the following localities: Avetrana, Carosino, Castellaneta, Faggiano, Fragagnano Ginosa, Grottaglie, Laterza, Lizzano, Manduria, Martina Franca, Maruggio, Massafra, Monacizzo, Monteiasi, Montemesola, Monteparano, Mottola, Palagianello, Palagiano, Pulsano, Roccaforzata, San Marzano, San Crispieri, S. Giorgio, S. Maria Camera, S. Maria della Camera, S. Giorgio, S. Maria della Musica. Giorgio, S. Maria della Camera, Sava, Statte-Crispiano, Talsano, Taranto, Torricella, Uggiano Montefusco. After 1866 the two hamlets of Crispiano and Statte (which became autonomous communes in 1919 and 1992 respectively) conserve in part registers pertaining to both localities, and in part autonomous registers; consequently for these localities three different series are conserved: Crispiano, Statte and Crispiano-Statte.
