Civil registry

The Isernia State Archive holds the Civil Registry files, which are subdivided in: Civil Registry (1809-1865). The Campobasso State Archive transferred the files in 1972. It sent the marriage and death certificates, the documents necessary to issue the marriage certificate (the so-called marriage processes) and the marriage announcements, as well as the “different acts”, which, through different laws, were in force since 1812. These documents are duplicates, the second copy that was sent to the Isernia Court. Most of the registries are gathered in parchment books. Civil Registry(1866-1940), which holds the Civil Registry files and the attached files from the Isernia Court, which received the second copy of the certificates. IThe documents were part of a broader ensemble of files sent by the Isernia City Hall, since the Court was set at the City Hall building, over the S. Francis Monastry, until the 1970s. IThe archive has been preserved in envelopes and it’s composed of Civil Registry and attached filesseries. It includes all cities from the Isernia Province (except Longano) and some cities from the Avellino, Campobasso, Caserta, and Naples provinces. The Forlì del Sannio Civil Registry file (1875-1899) holds the death and marriage certificates from that city.

Following the establishment of the province of Isernia, the series of Recruitment Registers (1844-1917) consisting of the extraction lists of members drawn by lot by the Municipalities and the recruitment lists drawn up by the Municipalities for each year or age class. The Campobasso State Archive transferred the files in 1972

The Trieste State Archive holds the Civil Registry of Trieste(1924-1944), which is composed of the duplicates of the Civil Registry files and the attached files, previously preserved in the Trieste District Court. All cities in the province are included in this file, even those given to Yugoslavia after the 1947 peace treaty.

The Trieste State Archives have made numerous digitisations available, including that of the matriculation sheets military district of Pola and Trieste, in which it is possible to search from the bottom, identifying the series (year) and then arriving at the name of the person sought (the names are all listed alphabetically).

The Catania State Archives hold the fonds of the Civil Status of Catania and Province (1820-1893). Ferdinand I, King of the Two Sicilies, established the Civil Registry in 1819. Ferdinand I, King of the Two Sicilies, established the Civil Registry in 1819. The fund includes material produced in the Bourbon period and later in the Unification period, the modus operandi of municipalities remained virtually unchanged. Civil registrars compiled the following registers: deeds of legitimate births, deeds of illegitimate births or projets, memoranda, marriage deeds or solemn promises, death certificates and miscellaneous deeds. At the same time, the attachments to birth certificates, marriage certificates, etc. were collected in files. By Royal Decree of 15 November 1865, the new order was introduced, which provided for the compilation of citizenship registers, but did away with registers of miscellaneous deeds.

For the period 1820-1865, documentation is preserved from the civil status of Catania (but only from 1841 to 1865) and the municipalities subject to the Catania Intendency. Also included in this series was material relating to the localities now in the province of Enna (established in 1927): Assoro, Carcaci, Catenanuova, Centuripe, Gagliano, Leonforte, Nicosia, Nissoria, Regalbuto, Sperlinga and Troina. This documentation was transferred to the Enna State Archives in 2013.

Between 1866 and 1893 only the registries from the Catania province are available, except those of Caltagirone, Grammichele, Militello, Mineo, Mirabella, Palagonia, Raddusa, Ramacca, S. Cono, S. M. de Ganzeria, Vizzini.

The Catania Military District Fund (1840-1890) holds:

List of conscription (1840-1948). The series also includes material from the pre-unification era. In addition to the conscription lists for the period from 1840 to 1890, there are extraction registers. For the period 1844-1891, the registers of the minutes of the ordinary meetings of the conscription councils and the general lists of deserters are also available.

The Catania Harbour Master’s Fund includes the conscription lists of enlisted personnel in the Navy and consists of 94 registers relating to the 1936-85 conscription classes. The fund can be consulted by means of payment lists broken down by year produced by the institution itself.

The file Catania Military District holds:

Matriculation rolls (1871-1889) (includes draft classes 1871, 1877, 1880, 1887, 1889). For searches in the registers we use an alphabetical repertory consisting of a list of names and their matriculation numbers, subdivided by year. The same research tools are available online.

Personal files of military personnel (1862-1900). This substantial core was joined in 2013 and 2016 by a further 360 files with documentation of military personnel from the classes of 1876 to 1898, supplementing the original collection. The files are sorted by class of birth. The search is carried out by means of various consultation tools structured according to the year of extraction and the alphabetical list of names of the military personnel whose file is held. The same lists are available online.

The Livorno State Archive holds the Civil Registry of the Livorno Court Circumscription (1866-1935) and the file Community of Livorno – Documents from the Italian period, where the series of annual indexes for births (1866-1896), marriages (1867-1894) and deaths (1866-1895) are available for consultation.

Draft lists

The Conscription Office fund, which conserves the conscription lists of male citizens born and resident in the municipalities of the Livorno and Portoferraio district between the years 1842-1941. The files Livorno Harbormaster Navy Recruitment(1901-1985) and Livorno Italian City Registry – Navy Recruitment(1867-1868) are also useful sources.

There are the matricular rolls of conscripts enlisted (classes 1907-1940) and the alphabetical columns (classes 1910-1940).

The Latina State Archive holds the Civil Registry files (1867-2000), which have been recently sent by the Latina Court and include documents from some of the cities of the province.

The Gaeta Harbormaster file holds the Navy Recruitment Lists, which contain information about the recruits born between 1900 and 1930.

The Latina Military District (classes of 1876-1925) and Rome Military District (classes of 1854-1947) hold the Recruitment Listsof the cities of the Latina province.

The institute has also set up a specific database on the gli operai della bonifica pontina associated with the 58.852 workers employed by the Piscinara di Littoria Land Reclamation Consortium from 1926 to 1949.

The fonds, with inventories, are freely accessible.

The Recruitment files, which hold the Recruitment Lists and the Draft cards, are: Military District – Recruitment Office of Porto Maurizio– Sanremo circumscription, Army Recruitment Lists (classes of 1866-1935); the Recruitment Lists of the Porto Maurizio Navy Military District(classes of 1901-1906); Porto Maurizio Captaincy – sailors draft cards (classes of 1886-1939); City of Oneglia – Recruitment Lists and draft cards (classes of 1792-1902); City of Porto Maurizio, Recruitment Lists (classes of 1792-1899). The draft cards give us information about the military service, the Army corps and the military campaigns in which the recruits served until their discharge.
