Since I was a little girl I was curious about my family history.
How my Family Tree was conformed and the reasons why my forefathers decided to come to Uruguay.
As time went by my interest continued to grow, until I decided to start my own investigation and try to put my Family Tree together.
I didn’t have too much to start with, only a handful of names, and my family didn’t even remember from what region of Italy they came from.
I started looking at the Graveyard, then the Civilian Records office and next in the Italian Aid Patronage for Italian emigrants and relatives, Migration National Office and finally several churches. After many setbacks I finally found a certificate containing a key point, my family came from Bergamo.
This search of more than 10 years lead me to rebuild my family history through conversations with relatives, who treasured in their memory lovely stories, but it wasn’t until I got to Antenati that I was able to gather all the information I needed.
Giov. Angelo y Giov. Pietro Viscardi set sail to “America” in 1880. Aboard the ship they met Rachele and Anna MaríaAgazzi, who were sisters and were travelling with their parents and brothers. Once they arrived to Santos port, in Brazil, G. Angelo got married to Rachele and G. Pietro married Anna Maria. After spending some time working at the railroad construction my great grandfathers decided to come to Uruguay along the Agazzi family.
Pietro and Anna Maria returned to Bergamo.
I always knew that part of the family had returned to Italy, but I knew nothing else, not even their names. After searching in Antenati for several months, looking commune after commune, trying to find any certificate with traces of my family, checking thousands of photo archives, I found the birth certificate of one of Pietro and Anna Maria´s sons. At that moment I knew their First Names, and most important of all, the commune was Almenno San Bartolomeo.
I began to contact people whose last name was Viscardi in Almenno, trying to find Pietro and Anna descendants…to my surprise, every Viscardi in town were relatives!
Once you find a hint, many others come up, and everything starts to put together as a huge puzzle. Thanks to Antenati we’ve been able to rebuild our bonds and family history, which had been lost for over 90 years.
