The Viterbo State Archive Viterbo holds the Civil Registry files from 1875 to 1992.

Army census

The Viterbo Recruitment Office holds the Recruitment Lists of the classes of 1852-1945 (with some gaps for the classes of 1880, 1882-1884) called to recruitment examination. Those lists include information about maternity, paternity, address, occupation, physical features and the outcome of the examination (able, reformed, extended exemption).

Recruitment number and military draw number

The Viterbo and Orvieto Military District contain the draft cards of classes of 1874-1945.

Civil registry

Until the establishment of the Civil Registry in Italy in 1865, in Piamonte the registry was a task carried out by priests. The State Archives in Turin hold the records of the Napoleonic civil status (1804-1813) for the municipalities of the Turin district alone. The Archive contains birth, marriage, and death certificates of the cities in which the Civil Registry was established.

Army census

The recruitment sources for the unitary period show the model of military organization that soon will be established in the whole Italian territory. The pre-unitarian archives, particularly those from the Ministry of War, hold recruitment files, draft cards of privates and non-commissioned officers, and lists that contain the names of wounded, dead awarded soldiers and draft dodgers. All the files are gathered in big sections called: Human Resources Division (1815-1860) Recruitmen Division (1816-1860), Extended exemption and Disable Division (1816-1853), Archive Division(1816-1853), Military Genius Division (1854-1860), General Quartermaster of the Navy – General Archive(1848-1861), Lombard Army (1848-1854), Alps Jägers (1859), Apennines Jägers(1859), Magra Jägers and Reggio Brigade (1859-1860) Modena Brigade (1859-1860), General Directorate of Infantry and Cavalry, General Directorate of Special corps (1859-1866), General Directorate of Recruitment (1860-1870), Southern Italian Army (1860-1864), Italian Volunteers (1866- late 19th century), Mille di Marsala (1860-1863), Sicilian Military Archive (1860-1861), Ministry of Navy – personnel and material (1815-1860). The archives from the next period of the Ivrea and Aosta Recruitment Office (classes of 1792-1904); the Turin Province Recruitment Office, which includes the Pinerolo circumscription (classes of 1792-1898); Susa Recruitment Office (classes of 1828-1895); Turin Recruitment Office (classes of 1814-1935) are useful to know the preliminary activities for recruitment.

Recruitment number and military draw number

The Ivrea Military District (classes of 1846-1926), includes the Valle de Aosta; the Chivasso (classes of 1876-1926), Pinerolo (classes of 1846-1926); and Turin (classes of 1875-1926) Military Districts gather the draft cards, which contain information about the military service of each recruit (privates and non-commissioned officers) until his discharge.

Online database are available for consultation at this institute: specially the database of approximately 35.000 garibaldines from the Southern Italy Army and the database of approximately 1.550 members of the Corpo dei Cacciatori Franchi; the database of the Bersaglieri in Crimea, which makes available the draft cards of officers, petty officers and bersaglieri who took part in the Crimean War of 1855-1856; the database of the draft cards from the Turin district, which includes 250.000 recruits (name, class, file number, and register number) for the 1874-1908 period, a project continuously reviewed and that provides digital copies of the sources; the database of the draft cards from Ivrea district for the period 1846-1826; the database of the more than 80.000 personal fascicles of torinese “fascists” registered at the Partito Nazionale Fascista local section.

Marital status

The Belluno State Archive holds the Napoleonic Belluno Civil Registry (1806 – 1815), which includes the Belluno, Pieve de Cadore, Auronzo, Feltre, Mel, Fonzaso and Agordo circumscriptions.

The Belluno Provincial Conscription Office fund (classes 1900-1949) contains documentation on men called up for military service and draft dodgers from the Belluno Military District. It is an open archival complex, which is augmented year by year with registers older than seventy years.

Matriculation sheets and roles

The Belluno Military District fonds (1836-1946) holds the papers of men who performed military service first under the Austrian government and then under the Italian government. This is a very rich archival complex, increased from one year to the next by documents that have reached the age of seventy years required to be deposited in the State Archives.

Marital status

The State Archive of Avellino holds the Avellino civil status fund (1809 – 1970) concerning the second copies of the birth, marriage, death and citizenship registers drawn up by the municipalities of the districts of Avellino, and the districts of Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi and Ariano Irpino until 1945. Attualmente sono conservati gli allegati del distretto di Avellino dall’anno 1956 e del distretto di Ariano Irpino per gli anni 1867/1957.

The districts of Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi and Ariano hold the Marriage processes (1862-1865) and its inventory.

– List of conscription (1840-1948).

The Fond Esiti di leva della provincia di Avellino preserves the conscription lists (classes 1853-1948) of the municipalities of the provincial territory, until 1923 divided into the three districts of Avellino (1871-1948), Ariano Irpino (1867-1948), Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi (1853-1948).

Matriculation sheets and roles

The Matriculation Rolls of the District of Avellino contains the enlisted in the Italian Army (classes 1848-1928 and 1939-1948) bound in volumes and sorted by matriculation number. Those files were delivered by the Salerno Military District.

Municipality of Calitri: Onciary Cadastre of Calitri of 1753 The site makes available to the public various documents of historical and genealogical interest relating to the municipality of Calitri, in the province of Avellino. These include the Catasto onciario, drawn up in 1753 by order of the authorities of the Kingdom of Naples. The cadastre has been partly digitised and can be consulted online. Data for more than 750 households are available, and it is also possible to consult the entire cadastre by downloading photos of the original document for the selected household. The site also presents the possibility of consulting other databases relating to the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, the ecclesiastical register of marriages (1677-1801), the register of baptisms (1789-1810) and the municipal register of marriages (1809-1955)

The civil status is subdivided into two fonds corresponding to two historical periods: Civil status of the territory of Asti, French period (deeds 1803 to 1813) with some parish registers (1636-1799); Civil status of the territory of Asti (deeds 1866-1930) of the Italian state.

The Civil Registry documents are gathered at the Civil Registry (1808-1938) collection, in which we can find the birth, marriage and death certificates and its attached documents for the Napoleonic, Restoration and Unified Italy Era. Civil registry

The Arezzo province Civil Registry previous to the Italian unification is held at the Tuscany Civil Registry Archive (1808-1865) in of the State Archive in Firenze.

The Ancestors Portal contains the few preserved registers of the civil status of the municipality of Arezzo (1816 – 1863), the censuses of Arezzo’s population (1861, 1871, 1881) and the exhibits of the Ospedale Santa Maria sopra i Ponti, later Spedale del Ponte della Misericordia.

Army census

Military district of Arezzo contains: Summary registers (classes 1883-1891), Drawing lists(classes 1841-1890), Conscription lists (classes 1842-1920). In addition, an internal database in Excel format was created with the names of the members and the main personal data for the classes 1842-1864, Liste di leva (Liste di leva) (classes 1821- ) kept at the State Archives in Firenze.

Military district of Arezzo contains: Military rolls of privates and troop graduates up to the last seventy years (classes 1875-1940), Military rolls (class 1852), Protocols of correspondence (1901-1940).

Online Sources

The transcriptions of the death and baptism registries of the Fraternità dei Laici are a useful source for the period between 1808 and 1881, together with the many documents from previous centuries available at the archive.
