Archivio di Stato di Roma

corso del Rinascimento 40 - 00186 Roma

Under the heading "Italian Civil Status" are collected the original second registers of civil status between 1871 and 1929, which were microfilmed between 1995 and 2001, when they were still at the Court of Rome, and which were subsequently digitised for publication on the Antenati Portal. Between 2006 and 2007 the Court of Rome transferred these registers to the State Archives of Rome, as part of a large-scale transfer of the civil status of the province of Rome. Unfortunately, in 2011, all the records were destroyed in a fire in a warehouse of the Iron Mountain company in Aprilia, where they had been stored. In order to remedy the loss of the original second series of civil status registers of the province of Rome, in 2015, thanks to the support of the Archival Superintendence of Lazio, FamilySearch launched a digitization campaign of the civil status archives kept in the municipalities of the province of Rome. The digital reproductions carried out then are published under the heading "Italian civil status (registers of municipalities)". They cover a period from 1871 to 1945. On that occasion, the first original of registers of which the second original had already been microfilmed at the Court of Rome was reproduced at many municipalities. Therefore, under the heading "Italian Civil Status" it is possible to consult the second original of the registers for the years 1871-1929 (approximately), while under the heading "Italian Civil Status (registers of municipalities)" it is possible to consult the first original of the registers for the years 1871-1945 (approximately). In many cases it is possible to consult both the first and the second original of the same register under the two headings.
